Hola, amigos! 🌊✨ Get ready to savor the serenity and discover the charm of Monhegan Island! I’m thrilled to share with you eight delightful reasons to visit this picturesque gem with its rustic vibe. Join me as I recount how we celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary on this enchanting island in Maine!
Let me tell you, this trip was a sweet surprise! Although my husband couldn’t keep it under wraps and had to give me a little heads-up—just in case we couldn’t make it—he truly made it special. After battling a week of sickness, I was still feeling a bit under the weather, but I decided that a cozy adventure was exactly what I needed!! So, bundled up and with our daughter in tow, we set off for a day of fun and exploration.
We caught the ferry with Hardy Boat Cruises, arriving bright and early at New Harbor around 8:30 am for our 9 am departure. The excitement was palpable as we prepared for our adventure! Now, let’s dive into the highlights of our day on Monhegan!!
1- The Entertaining Ferry Ride

Boat ride to Monhegan Island, Maine
Our journey began with an unforgettable ferry ride! 🚢 The captain was not just our navigator but also our charming tour guide, sharing fascinating tales about the islands and landmarks surrounding us. The crew matched his energy with their bubbly personalities, making the whole experience even more delightful. As we sailed the 10 miles to the island, we were treated to a spectacular show of dolphins, porpoises, and even a giant sunfish! The weather was simply perfect, setting the tone for a fun-filled day of exploration. Arriving at 10am we had until 3pm(5 hours) to explore!!
2- Breathtaking Natural beauty
Oh, the views! Monhegan Island is a feast for the eyes, boasting stunning landscapes, rugged cliffs, and serene beaches. Every corner we turned offered a new breathtaking vista. Whether you’re hiking along the trails or just soaking up the sun along our walk, the natural beauty is a reminder of why we love to escape to places like this. This quaint village and its Island had amazing views of the ocean!!
I was also able to take a short 30 minute, 5$ trip around the island where travelers could take in the views another option to walking but still taking in the complete 360 degrees of the beauty that surrounds this gorgeous islands!! The ferry departs at 2pm!! I highly recommend this!! This was another amazing experience!! We saw cliffs, the wreck of the D.T. Sheridan and so much more including the seals!!
Stay tuned as I share more about our fabulous adventure and why Monhegan Island should be on your travel bucket list! 🌅
3-Monhegan Brewing Company
Do you like Breweries? Well, This island has its own brewery!! It serves up a simple but yummy food menu, but my hubby loved his Crowsnest IPA!! They also had a yummy Ginger beer we enjoyed that they make too! yummy!
4-Lighthouse
There is a beautiful lighthouse on the Island!! It was beautiful to see from a distance!! I also enjoyed the pictures i was shown after and sent to me after, because of my congestion and the effects of the heat I couldn’t join my hubby and daughter!! I was abit overdressed, we thought it would be a cool day so i wore a sweater dress…we tried to find another outfit but gave up…lol!
5-Coffee Shop/Bakery
Do you love a good bakery?? I loved visiting the coffee/bake shop located right off the pier!!! Eating delicious treats and a cup of coffee is one of my favorites, and this bakery had delicious treats with great prices!! Maybe next time ill try the coffee because this time we stopped along our walk to buy a smoothie (delicious too)!!
6-Wildlife Encounters
Friendly Seal faces
We got to see one puffin while cruising to the Island but the captain said that they are actually usually heading south for the winter, what a treat!! We did encountered many seals and even a pup sunbathing!! So cute!! Also from what ive been reading Monhegan is a wonderful place for bird watching!!
7-Hiking
Monhegan is a square mile in area, and contains 12 miles of trails!! The trails can be steep and strenuous… I kinda felt that with my lung issues because I was sick!! wowza, I love learning more about this Island, the more I learn the more I want to go back…. maybe next time we’ll hike another trail or more!!
8-Rustic Village
Quaint Coastal Village
I felt like we were going back in time, a time where people had horse and buggies..lol.. I think it was the unpaved roads, few vehicles, 60 residents and very rustic signage..lol!!!! Its mostly a walking Island, funny though i wanted so badly to visit thr lighthouse that i almost asked someone in their golf cart for a ride!! lol!!! But its a vibe worth experiencing, and people on the Island are pretty arts which is another vibe I really enjoyed!! There are museums and galleries that are worth visiting ive been reading and artists often visit the Island to paint and discover inspiration!! Very cool and Serene at the same time!!
