Ice fishing on the Kennebec, a fun adventure @ Worthings smelt camp

β™₯ Hey friends πŸ™‚ hope you are doing well!! Wanted to share our ice Smelting adventure with you!! We had a great time!! We got like 12 smelts πŸ™‚ not a great catch but we had a good time with the kids πŸ™‚ my daughter was like 2 when we went last time so this was a true first for her, and that was like 8 years ago!! Smelt fishing camps on the Kennebec is a fun & a unique fishing experience if you haven’t tried before!!
This is abit of what its like πŸ™‚ I’ll take you on our trip πŸ™‚

Smelting Camps

Jim Worthing’s Smelt Camps are located at 145 Water street, Randolph Me!!

Its a Maine tradition to go icefishing, and many people fish for smelts & rent these little ice shacks! Interestingly Many people catch smelts to enjoy a smelt Dinnah!! (Dinner) hmm!! Sounds yummy!! If we weren’t so tired I think we would have tried it too!! πŸ˜‚  So basically this is ice fishing but in a little shacks you’re renting with everything provided for you, our bait which were sand worms, were included in the price!! Wood for the stove too!! Yay!! We were here from 11:15 to 5pm for 50 dollars for four of us!! Can’t beat that!!

Fishing shacks

The shack we rented was a very simple structure, with lights!! How cool is that!! Inside was a little wood stove that kept us so warm we had to open the door and cool ourselves off!! Lol! I loved we could warm water on our kettle & even cook on it!! The interior designer in me would have loved to get this place looking cute & maybe lodge like looking, I think these shacks have great potential πŸ™‚ but for today it had to be a solid structure for us to enjoy our fishing I told myself  πŸ™‚  πŸ˜‚ because with a little tlc, these would be adorable!!!

Unfortunately many people can smoke in these so there was slight smell of cigarette smoke in ours.. yucky but once the stove was on it seemed to clear things up. Also I covered the butt cans with foil fo keep smell under control that seemed to help πŸ™‚

The attendant Kevin was super helpful & very kind! The gals in the office were nice too!!

Cooking on our wood stove!! Quesadillas & kettle!!

I loved cooking on our wood stove! We boiled water for coffee and teas & heated our bbq chicken quesadillas on it!!  I brought along tortillas, a can opener, can of fat free refried beans, bbq chicken that I had made earlier & mozzarella cheese & plant based cheese πŸ™‚ yummy!!

Dessert; Coffee press & tea

For dessert we had this delicious gluten free dreamin of chocolate, chocolate cake πŸ™‚ with coffee from a coffee press and Mint medley tea!! The kids had lemonade πŸ™‚ yummy!!

Uno Flip

Besides eating we played Uno Flip while we were waiting for action on the lines πŸ™‚ honestly my daughter and I just enjoyed being outside and doing something different while we were there!! And spending time with the family!!!If wasn’t until an hr before we left that we started getting our loot!! πŸ˜† then it was so exciting πŸ™‚  but with a winter storm coming and our departure time approaching quickly, sadly we had to pack our things and head out!! Til next time πŸ™‚

We decided we would use our fish for bait for another fishing trip & Bella decided to do a photo shoot!! πŸ˜† so cute!!

Why not try smelting at any of the 7 fishing shacks on the Kennebe, it would be a unique & fun experience for you & your family πŸ™‚

Thanks for visiting πŸ™‚ enjoy your evening! Stay safe & healthy friends πŸ™‚

  1. […] Another idea is you want to experience ice fishing is to hire a guide and pay $500 for an 8 hr excursion or 300 for 1/2 day!! For an awesome experience. I think it’s wonderful.. some guides even make a meal prepared on the ice!! Love it!!
